Smart poles with WiFi facility, surveillance cameras and environmental monitoring and other smart city infrastructure flagged off, more suggestions from experts.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) kicked off the free WiFi project under the Smart City initiative. The launch was done at Charkha Park, Connaught Place, New Delhi by Union home minister Rajnath Singh. The setup of the project includes smart poles that will deliver free public WiFi, sensor-based real-time pollution monitoring system and 360-degree surveillance cameras. Singh expressed his belief during the launch that NDMC’s initiatives and progress can serve as a model for other smart cities as well.
More smart city infrastructure
Besides the above-mentioned infrastructure, the launch also inaugurated a solar tree with LED lights, mobile charging points and ideation center for entrepreneurs. For road maintenance, four mechanical road sweeping machines, two litter picking machines and 10 auto-tippers were flagged off as well.
Suggestions came from Lieutenant governor Anil Baijal to design smart parking management facilities with information of vacancy in nearby parking lots. He further suggested that the poles should be able to detect signals and traffic violation. Digital panels should be available to file e-FIR and women distress complaint.
The smart parking facility initially installed fell short in service, affected by the city’s climatic conditions, as addressed by NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar. However, he asserted that further plans will be put in place for the same within a week.
As of now, 55 smart poles were installed after resolving existing issues, as addressed by Kumar.
