Use of machine learning to curb and combat cyberbullying by Instagram sets a great example for AI technology experts to make world a better place to live in
With cyberbullying on the rise, Instagram on its blog announced that it will be using technology to detect bullying in captions and photos uploaded on the network.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram on the blog said, “In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month in the US, the upcoming Anti-Bullying Week in the UK and anti-bullying efforts around the world, we are pleased to announce these new ways to combat bullying on our platform.”
He also mentioned that while Instagram users can directly report a photo or a post that promotes or supports bullying, the new filter will automatically filter such posts and inform Instagram team about the same.
The use of machine learning technology
Setting a perfect example for AI innovators and machine learning experts, Instagram’s artificial intelligence or machine learning technology will scan photos and their captions before sending them to Instagram community operations team for review.
Mosseri outlining the need for the same mentioned on the blog, “This change will help us identify and remove significantly more bullying — and it’s a crucial next step since many people who experience or observe bullying don’t report it. It will also help us protect our youngest community members since teens experience higher rates of bullying online than others. This new technology has begun to roll out and will continue to in the coming weeks.”
Activating cyberbullying Instagram filter
Instagram users will need to activate the ‘Hide Offensive Comment’ filter after logging in to their accounts. The network has also given its users a choice to manually filter specific words that they think promote or support bullying.
This feature is probably a part of their machine learning process that will learn offensive words described as ‘cyberbullying’ by users and use AI to further combat bullying over Instagram.
