Solar energy to power production units at ACC Cements

The 30MW solar installation by ACC in its cement production units at Karnataka will meet about 50 per cent power requirements annually using renewable energy.

The sun has become a prominent resource with the growing need for alternate renewable energy sources. ACC Limited, one of the largest cement producers in the country, has taken the decision to adopt the sun’s energy at a grand scale. The organisation’s grinding units at Kudithini and Thondebhavi in Karnataka will hold a total solar capacity of 30 MW which will generate 45 million units of energy throughout the year. In this process, ACC will meet over 50 per cent of its power requirement in these cement manufacturing plants using renewable energy.

Solar partnerships
To execute the move, ACC has signed a 10-year solar power purchase agreement with Amplus Solar for 20MW of power and ClearMax Solar for 10MW.

Neeraj Akhoury, managing director & CEO, ACC Limited said, “We are very conscious of our responsibilities, so this use of renewable energy is a strong step towards lowering carbon emissions thus minimising our ecological footprint. We are committed to delivering the Company’s ambitious Sustainable Development 2030 Plan”. The LafargeHolcim Sustainable Development 2030 Plan focuses on four pillars of sustainability – climate, circular economy, water and nature, and people and communities. ACC’s adoption of renewable energy aims to address several of these areas.

The initiative will enable the enterprise to reduce 38,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and power up over 2.1 crore LED bulbs throughout the year. Studies suggest that these statistics are equivalent to planting 45,000 trees and saving of 90 million liters of water (as certified by Solar Energy Research Institute Singapore) annually.
